The News in Google Earth

News organizations publish the news through RSS (really simple syndication) feeds. One way to view these feeds, when they are available as KML files, is through Google Earth.

To you and me, this means that we can use an RSS reader (Google Earth in this case) to subscribe to feeds. This will allow us to automatically see the news displayed Google Earth.

The cool thing about this is that Google Earth displays the news geographically. This generally means that the stories will show up at the location where they are being syndicated from.

Cool, huh? How might visually-based news change your students perception of news?

Google Search Tools/Strategies

There are three new ways that you can view search results from Google.

Info View
Timeline View
Map View

To use these tools, simply enter your seach terms and then follow them with one of the following:

view:info
view:timeline
view:map

Select one of the above options. What are the pros/cons of viewing your results in this way? What worked/didn't work?

December Meeting

The Organization for Educational Technology and Curriculum, through Jennifer Arns, will be providing the funding for educators to participate in Montana?s EdTech CADRE for the 2005-2006 school year. Our goal is to target technology leaders in the school districts served by the grants and to provide them with further training on cutting edge technologies and effective professional development skills.

The fall CADRE meeting will be December 9-10, 2005 and April 21-22, 2006. Topics will include blogs, Smartboards, Furl, Flickr, and digital medias just to name a few.

Participants- Please select teacher leaders who will benefit from the training and share the information with others. If you do not have good candidates for the number of participants allotted, please let me know as I will be able to redistribute them to others.

Laptops- participants should bring their laptops that have wireless Internet capabilities. We will be doing many activities that involve the Internet and will be working in a conference room that has a wireless network (the OPI has a few available to borrow if needed).

Schedule: The CADRE training will begin on Friday, December 9th at 1:00 p.m. and continue into the evening and then continue on Saturday, December 10th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Hotel Reservations: Participants need to contact the Mountain Valley Inn, 2101 11th Avenue (near the Red Lion Hotel) to make reservations and secure a room. The room block is held under the name ?OPI Tech Cadre?. Double occupancy (room sharing) is encouraged to hold the costs down. Please review the enclosed map for diving directions. [NOTE: The block of rooms will be released to the general public on December 2, 2005 please make the necessary reservations before that date.]

Food- The OPI will provide break treats for both days, dinner Friday evening and lunch on Saturday. Participants should plan on eating lunch before arriving on Friday and on eating breakfast at the hotel on Saturday morning.

Exciting Door Prize! Once again, there is a possibility of a door prize for a few individuals to attend, with expenses paid, the OETC?s Instructional Technology Strategies Conference, February 19-21, 2006 in Portland, Oregon.

Travel Cost Reimbursement- during the meeting, we will explain the procedures for the reimbursement of travel, food and lodging costs. We will be using this reimbursement formsmx.gif.

Please e-mail Michael a list of the individuals, and the districts that they represent. More information about our meeting can be found on the cadre website http://mt.oetc.org.

Thank you!

I'm looking forward to these professional development opportunities!
