UM Technology Application Project
Hello fellow teachers,
Martin Horejsi, Mary Engstrom, and I teach the Educational Technology courses at The University of Montana. My colleagues and I are teaching four sections of instructional technology to pre-service teachers and have revamped the course this summer to better reflect how technology is used in the K-12 classroom. One of the projects we have implemented is called the technology application project, where we pair a group of students with a practicing classroom teacher. In our model, the teacher picks a unit of instruction and works with students in our class to develop a technology rich lesson that is implemented later this fall.
I am attaching a brief description to this post, please take a minute to read the short description to determine your interest. If this sounds like something you would like to be part of, please click on one of the links below to email Martin or myself.

Presenting
In our discussion of presentation skills- we discussed the importance of using clear and precise speech. It is important to introduce who you are and your experience with the topic. Being positive and flexible in your presentation is neccessary to keep the audience listening.
It is important to continue to bring the discussion back around to the objectives of the presentation- so the audience is very clear with the purposes of your presentation.
The most important tool that will keep your audience listening is to have a sense of humor and variety in how you share your wealth of knowledge.

Why present anything?
-Sharing is embedded within our DNA. We must do it.
Are introductions in presentations essential?
-Yes. Until a satisfactory introduction is made, the information from the presenter is forced through all the listener's brainpower filters as the listener attempts to configure the proper place and way to store the information in his or her own brain.
How does one establish relevancy in a presentation?
-By knowing about the topic, the learning environment, and the audience. By triangulating the appropriate level of each, along with a link to past knowledge, the presenter maximizes the synergistic effects of human nature.
Do words matter?

Presentation Ideas: Chapter 5 Feedback
Why Present?
 Because I have to!
 I have something worth sharing
I am a teacher time saving to present to a group vs individual
Because I care I am excited about sharing what I know and what I have learned
Are Intros Essential?
Hooking and engaging your audience is essential
The type of intro depends upon your audience, your purpose, your time frame (10%?)
How does one establish relevancy?
 Make an introduction purposeful:
A. Not just name and agenda
B. Focus and engage!
 Set the stage HUGLEY IMPORTANT
Build a good base of rapport
Do words Matter?
 Unequivocally, yes
Humor can back fire when words are misunderstood
Personal: What are you going to work on?
Handouts timing is questionableIt depends upon what the training is about, if it is guided, lecture, hands-onneed to work on that
Reading the audience to decide when it is time to change things up a bitmake sure you are in tune with the audience
Create a deep bag of tricks
Make sure I know my stuff before the presentation

Chapter 5 Reflection
Why Present Anything?
*We need to present because it's what we do!
*It was interesting to read about what side of the room to enter from due to what we know about the brain.
Introductions in Presentations:
*Start with something that gains the interest of the audience and remember first impressions. Establishing credibility on the front end is essential.
How Does One Establish Relevancy in a Presentation?
1. Know your audience
2. Help participants make connections to what they know
Do Words Matter?
1. Vocabulary is very important especially if it is new to the audience.
2. Keep message positive.
What Are You Going To Work On?
Heat up the griddle before you fry the pancake!!
Let students know that dissatisfaction for the behavior is not personal.

Geo-caching with a Surprise!

Our first geo-cache was located in a camp of a homeless person, living in a tent. She unzipped her "door" when we started searching her campsite, and pointed to it. What a surprise!

Urban Bridges Geo-cache

We were extremely successful with our GPS device today. We knew there were several ways to get to the cache and ended up choosing the most difficult terrain. We hiked through wooded areas, forded streams, met wild animals, and finally found our cache. The photo shows where it's located, but these branches surrounding it were a well-worn path compared to some of the "trails" we followed/made. -- Michael, Rachel, Maureen, and Jennifer

Web-Conferencing Review
Libby, Amanda and Diane reviewed Yugma and vyew in an attempt to find a straightforward method for onine collaboration. What we discovered were that the applications were not terribly user-friendly, buggy and sharing control was difficult. Tried and true applications like MSN messenger, Moodle, Google docs/spreadsheets, etc. appear to be the better options for us at this point.
We are still hopeful---

VoiceThread
Voicethread is a cool tool!
It is an application that allows you to upload images and narrate them with your voice. It is a great tool that could be used to communicate messages and preserve cultural history.
Students could use this tool to share their creative endeavors.
Students could collaborate with other cultures and towns using thier own images and narration. The possibilities are endless.
This app is easy to use and easy to embed in other sites.

Web 2.0 Application: Thinkature
Thinkature:
This is a collaboration tool that allows users to create image maps. Users build and edit image maps to brainstorm on a concept or project. Jennifer and I chose to collaborate on the building of a school website.
Recently found on desireecaskey's weblog. | in Learning (What I Learned) | Comments (0)
Thinkature
Thinkature would be a great tool to work on a visual outline for a project. It has some great capabilities, but things we'd like to see added are formattable text, actual drawing tools, a chat that stays active as you discuss, more stable drag-and-drop features, and colored lines to link. Even though you can color-code the boxes as you work, the final printout does not include colors in the boxes. Importing graphics is a feature that we liked, but we had to make sure to have a small image to upload as a large image covered all our work.

Peg Fisher
Hello all,
I attended Cadre a couple of years ago, and am happy to be back. I am the Tech Coordinator for Poplar School District and the grant director for the BTG PSATT grant. When I started with computers 37 years ago I felt I was on the cutting edge - very much a forward thinking person. Now, with the exponential growth in the technologies of the past few years I feel I am "running" to catch up and sometimes feel like an old dog trying to learn new tricks. I plan on continuing to work at staying up-to-speed. Thanks for the help!

I wonder if... in 12 years at school we (the system) effectively and efficiently are teaching the creativity, enthusiasm, communication and collaboration right our of most of our children? Clinton teacher and coach
My name is Amanda McGill. I have taught fifth grade for five years at Clinton School. I am also the basketball and volleyball coach of our junior high girls and boys. Before Clinton, I taught 3rd grade in Pahrump, Nevada for 5 years and then I did 5th grade for a year in St. Regis, Montana.
This is my 5th year as part of the TIC TOC grant, which has been an amazing experience for me. I started barely knowing how to turn on a computer and now I am the on-site coordinator for my school. I now have a Smart board in my classroom as well as a set of Palm Pilots. I feel blessed to have been a part of this grant and will be sorry it is gone next year.

On a personal level, I have a 14 year old son Austin who is a freshman in high school at Hellgate High in Missoula. Four years ago, I bought the house I grew up in in Milltown, MT. I enjoy house projects, reading, gardening, and outdoors activities. I am a die hard Griz fan with season tickets to the football games. GO GRIZ!!
